Alastor slipped into the delicate, wrought-iron chair at the cafe that sat at the end of the street. He kept his hood up and his hands in his pockets as he slumped deep in his seat, hoping that nobody would bother him to order-or-get-out for a while. Usually the illusion of being there to wait for someone did a good job of buying time, so he did just that, pretending to scan around for the nonexistent second party. In reality, he just wanted to sit and think a bit. He had a home now, but it was hard to beat habits of the street, including loitering like a champ.
And people watching. His feigned searching had the secondary benefit of letting him watch and observe the other people going about their normal, happy lives.
One participant of this cafe was not as happy, though he pretended to be. If you looked hard enough you would notice the slight slump in his shoulders, or how his eyes never seemed to brighten, although they already glowed. He saw Alastor and smirked, he remembered pulling this trick when he needed information.
He quietly sat down across the table and looked at Alastar, with his extended pupil the looked like it spiked through his iris. He leaned back in the chair with a smirk branded on his face and his arms folded on his chest. "Who you waitin' for then? I'll assume no one is actually coming and your just observing."
Sometimes I mess up, bear with me, or don't, whatever.
Alastor jerked back slightly once he realized that the stranger was talking to him. Shit. Why him?
Also what the hell was with that leap of logic? Irritated, Alastor tugged his hoodie a little lower so that it almost covered his eyes as he replied, "Actually I'm waiting on my friend." It was a lie but it rolled off his lips easily.
Lucious smirked, so he was wrong. This was strange to him concerning things like this, but it still didn't add up nicely to him, mostly because he couldn't think with Anthem's hand at his back and their clearly no BS basis. Concentration is what he needed. "I guess it was rude of me to jump to such conclusions." He stood up and offered the chair to Anthem. "I hadn't realized you were sitting her, my apologize. I'm Lucious, if you wanted to know. And although I'm invading I'd like to know your names as well." He says to Alastor and Anthem with fake happiness, hoping he wasn't pushing his intrusions too far with the statement, though he almost knew he was. He wasn't even sure what one of their genders was and he was already asking for names. He realized he was pushing it, but he really wanted to meet new people. Especially the kid that was already sitting.
Alastor wondered why. Maybe he's just being friendly, he reasoned. Well, then Alastor would probably be doing him a favor if he warned him off. But he didn't have it in him to be intentionally assholeish, at least not right now. "I'm Alastor," he said simply, giving Anthem a thin smile. He really hadn't expected them to show up like that, but man, talk about timing.
"Anthem," they replied coolly, slipping into the newly vacated seat. "No need for apologies. This is a public place. It's well within your rights to start up conversation. However," Anthem glanced up at Lucious, leaning back slightly in the chair with an unimpressed expression, "I'm not entirely sure I follow your logic. Perhaps next time you can trust that a stranger knows their situation better than you do."
Anthem turned back to Alastor and offered an apologetic smile in return.
"Sorry I'm late, Alastor. Did you want to stay here, or go ahead and get going?"
Hopefully Alastor had been bluffing about waiting on someone, otherwise this was going to fall flat when a newcomer showed up, but Anthem had assisted in enough cons and evasions to read body language and universal distress signals when necessary. Hopefully Alastor would want to get going--they definitely hadn't planned on being out and about in a crowded space, and interacting with strangers was not what they were prepared for on this particular afternoon. But then, when did things ever go according to plan with their sessionmates?
This definitely wasn't originally planned. This definitely logical. Why meet at a cafe just to leave? He was being lied to and he didn't like it at all, not at all. He'd dealt with to many of these kinds of situations and it pissed him off. But what perfect timing this...person had.
He stood up straighter "Leaving already? That'd be a shame. You two seem pretty interesting, though you probably have business to attend to, yeah? Don't let me keep you here then."
Sometimes I mess up, bear with me, or don't, whatever.
Alastor continued to look at the stranger in confusion. Maybe he had just wanted to chat? Alastor squirmed, feeling bad for giving the brush-off, and at the same time a huge sense of relief that he wasn't obligated to play nice socially. Of course with Anthem here that meant he still had to do so anyway--albeit with someone he was familiar with--so there went his day really.
"Uh, here," he mumbled and jotted down his pester name on a napkin--nobodySpecial. Then almost immediately regretted because what if the stranger actually messaged him?
Ugh this was hard and complicated. He quickly got up and mumbled, "Kay thanks yep bye," hastening outside, trusting Anthem would follow.

"Yes, I'm afraid we already had plans," Anthem responded smoothly, standing up and offering a slight bow with an apologetic smile. "This cafe was just the easiest place to meet up since my phone isn't working and I didn't know when I would be done my earlier errands. Unfortunate timing, but I assure you, we're really not half so interesting as all that. Not compared to so many other people in the Glitch. Have a good one."
And with that Anthem turned smartly on their heel and followed after Alastor, slipping nimbly by the other cafe patrons with catlike grace. Once they were alongside their sessionmate, Anthem became noticeably less confident and collected, the aloof air dropping like a curtain.
"Err, I hope I wasn't out of line," Anthem offered anxiously, glancing over at Alastor to judge his reaction. "You looked uncomfortable. That wasn't a friend of yours, was it?"
Anthem was quietly relieved. Thank Godtier, they hadn't screwed up. In fact, they'd even managed to help a little! Their face brightened considerably at the thought.
"I was at the Prospitian Royal Planetary Concert Hall," Anthem shrugged matter-of-factly. "On days when there aren't concerts, I can sometimes find an empty practice room. I have space back at the house, but I like the acoustics better there. Also," they added as an afterthought, checking a sleek black wristband, "I hadn't reached 15,000 steps yet today."
Step count was almost as important as practice time. Numbers and music were a lot easier to read than words, and a lot more straightforward than social cues. It helped.
Well it was nice they at least had some sort of idea of what to do with their day. His earlier plans of 'do nothing in public' had been disrupted and he didn't like the 'do nothing at home' route because it made him moody and sad.
But that pretty much used up all his ideas. "I guess I could walk with you," he offered. "Cardio is good for something something I'm sure."

"Cardio is great," Anthem replied quickly. There were very few topics on which they felt comfortable conversing, so when this one came up they jumped on it readily, inwardly cringing only the slightest amount at the realization of how awkward that sounded.
"Er, I mean it seems to come in handy here. Not as much as you'd think. It's not as if we live in a war zone or anything, but...you know. There are some dangerous people out there. Staying in shape is pretty practical."
Sure. That was a reasonable enough attempt at conversation.
