I like to think we all have times (when we're not careful) where we lag on our posts. Here's some helpful hints that have helped me in the past.
When you don't know how to expand your posts, remember that your character isn't the only subject to write on.
They are in a place full of sights, sounds, things to touch, and even smell. (maybe taste, depends on the circumstances)
Look inward. Elaborate of the thoughts in the background. What were they thinking before they met someone, went somewhere? What do they think when a new person comes around? What are their emotions? Are they distraught? Does the new person make them nervous? Why would the new person make them nervous? is it because of their aggressive posture, or do they have a gun in their hand?
Feel free to expand! We like to read about what's going on in the inside of a character because we get to see exactly how these interactions are effecting and ultimately shaping these people.
If you don't expand it's pretty much this:
he said
she said
he sits down
she says something else
he nods but stays silent
she has nothing to talk about now.
but if you expand, suddenly!~
Rose looked down at the ground. She wasn't exactly sure what he wanted her to say, heck, she wasn't even sure why he spoke to her in the first place! Silently biting her lip, she wracked her brain to think of something relevent to say. She wished her friend was here now, she would know what to say. Rose had never been the best at talking to boys, they had always made her so nervous.
and now, even though nothing has been said, the boy can notice that she's nervous and have his own feelings and thoughts about it. It prompts him to think or do something to get rid of this awkward silence between them that otherwise would have only been felt between the rpers themselves...and the interaction could have died because neither side could think of what to do next.
