So we have a karaoke thread, but what about a thread to just share music? I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm always on the lookout for new bands to listen to. Post any kind of music you listen to here!
Mine are linked to my favourite song by each artist so that you can get an idea of what their music is like. I'll also include a short description of the kind of music, and (mostly) instrumental stuff is italicized since I listen to a lot of it. This is by no means all I listen to, but it's most of my lesser-known favourites!
Alias Conrad Coldwood (Minuit a Fond la Caisse) - ACC did the soundtrack for an indie horror game called OFF; he does a lot of bizarre ambient stuff.
Amon Tobin (Foley Room) - I've actually heard he's pretty popular, but I'm going to put him here just in case. Really awesome electronic music.
Animus Invidious (Souldance [Reprise]) - I know this guy in person, actually! He does some cool electronic/remix stuff. This track is a little more on the ambient side, but when it gets to the melody... *shudders*
Arkasia (Evolution) - I'm not as familiar with them, but their dubstep is awesome.
Astronautalis (Dimitri Mendeleev) - Historical fiction hip hop. Yeah, I don't know either.
Because of Ghosts (No Stars in Tokyo) - Ambient post-rock. I'm a sucker for music boxes and glockenspiels.
Chipzel (Something Beautiful) - Chiptunes, if you couldn't guess.
Cloud Cult (The Exploding People) - I could go on and on about these guys, but I won't. Just know that they're my absolute favourite band. Mostly general indie rock, but they don't like to stay within the lines of one genre.
Detektivbyrån (Life/Universe) - Music boxes and glockenspiels again. I'm not a huge fan of the accordion, but these guys are an exception.
Electric President (Robophobia) - Indie rock. Lots of concept albums here; my favourite is Sleep Well, a compilation of songs based on dreams and nightmares the members have had.
The Flashbulb (Good Luck Out There) - Electronic/cinematic music. I don't have much to say about them, but they're definitely in my top five.
Followed by Ghosts (The Entire City Was Silent) - Mostly ambient stuff. Pretty, but repetitive.
Future World Music (Rise of the Machines) - Cinematic stuff. Most of their music will make you want to go on an epic quest.
Good Luck (Impossible) - Apparently punk? I don't know, I'm really bad at labelling genres, but that's what their bandcamp says. They seem a little more lighthearted.
Gregory and the Hawk (Oats We Sow) - Meredith Godreau is a goddess. Somewhere between indie folk and pop.
Her Name is Calla (Condor and River) - Dark post-rock music. Really long songs.
I Fight Dragons (Give it Up) - Chiptune Nintendocore! Full of songs referencing nerd culture, plus the melodies are pretty awesome.
Jack's Mannequin (Dark Blue) - Piano/pop rock. I've heard they're a little more popular.
Jeremy Messersmith (John the Determinist) - Indie pop. Does a lot of concept albums, which are probably my favourite kinds of albums.
Kyte (Aerials) - Umm... shoegazer electropop about killing things? And/or love. It's about a 50/50 chance here. Cool lyrics, but I wouldn't look them up unless you're prepared for surprise and possibly distress.
LIGHTS OUT ASIA (Psiu! Puxa!) - Moooore post-rock. Nah, I don't like this genre at all.
Matthias Verbinnen (Battle of the Brave) - Mostly cinematic/video game music. You can get most of his stuff for free, too!
NemesisTheory (Ghostwave) - Lots of remixes here, mostly of video game songs. She does some original songs as well, mostly trance and Mega Man-styled music.
No More Kings (Grand Experiment) - Tons and tons of pop culture references. There's everything from D&D (Critical Hit) to Karate Kid (Sweep the Leg) here, though if you're looking for something serious, I suggest you turn back.
no.9 (Re: Bug Beats) -This is my theme song ok I have no idea what to call this, but it's great. All of it is great. Go listen to them. Also, tap out the tempo here while listening! It's simple, but kinda cool.
The Protomen (Sons of Fate) - Dystopian Mega Man fanfiction rock opera. And it's commercial, too. Ridiculous, sure, but also fucking awesome.
Radical Face (Welcome Home) - Umm... if I could tell you the genre for this I would, but everyone else seems as confused as I am. Mostly concept albums. This is one of the guys who works on Electric President, if you recall earlier in the list.
RickoLus (Fallen Streets) - Technically a collab with Astronautalis. His voice isn't too great, but if you can get past that the music's pretty good.
sleepmakeswaves ([hello] cloud mountain) - HEY GUESS WHAT. More post rock! They're my favourite of the genre overall, though.
Styrofoam (Couches in Alleys) - General electronica, I guess. This particular song is a collab with Ben Gibbard (from The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie), but Styrofoam's songs alone are also great.
Trifonic (Good Enough) - Weird. Ambient dubstep, I guess.
Two Steps from Hell (Jump!) - Cinematic stuff! If you're not listening to TSFH, I don't know what to do with you.
Voxtrot (Ghost) - Indie rock again. Real Live Version is another good one, if you like Ghost.
Wintergatan (Starmachine2000) - WINTERGATAN THOUGH. Basically Detektivbyrån except 8000x better. It even has some of the same people, actually. The song in that video ends at 4:00 or so, but it's really fun to watch so I decided to link to that one.
